On 21 July 2022, H.E. Mrs. Phantipha Iamsudha Ekarohit, Ambassador of Thailand to Spain, and Mr. Pakorn Kumpornlua, First Secretary, had a meeting with Mr. Jose Hila, Mayor of the City of Palma de Mallorca, to discuss ways to deepen cooperation in various sectors between the Embassy of Thailand in Madrid and local authorities and private sectors of the City.
On this occasion, the Ambassador informed that the visit of the Embassy was not only to build a closer relationship between the executives and authorities of Spain but also to visit and organise Mobile Consular Services for the Thai communities on the island.
The Ambassador extended appreciation to the Mayor and the City Council of Palma de Mallorca for their assistance in taking care of the Thai communities on the island, which provided support for them to get through the worst difficulties of the COVID-19 situation. In this regard, the Ambassador also wishes to see this strong cooperation in providing good care and protection for Thais in the area continue in the future. The Thai communities, as well as their businesses on the island, have contributed to the economic development and tourism industry of the Balearic Islands, as well as Mallorca. On the international level, Thailand and Spain, along with the Balearic Islands, still have immense potential to enhance cooperation in trade and tourism.
Mr. Jose Hila reaffirmed the City Council's support for the Embassy´s mission as well as providing assistance to Thai people on the island. Both sides also exchanged information on the COVID-19 effects on the tourism industry of Thailand and Spain and agreed on the importance of sustainable tourism, an area where both sides can exchange knowledge in the future.
