The Royal Thai Embassy in Madrid, in cooperation with the Moving Images Spain festival, organized the screening of Thai films in the Moving Images Spain Festival, held at the Cine Studio, Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid during 22 – 30 June 2018.  The festival, with an aim to encourage popularity of Asian films in Spain, had selected wide ranges of films from different countries, namely China, Japan, Korean, Taiwan, Cambodia etc. to be shown in Madrid. Thailand had been chosen as the highlight of the event, with 10 films shown in the festival.

On 22 June 2018, H.E. Mrs. Rattikul Chansuriya, Ambassador of Thailand to Spain, presided over the inauguration of the event. The inauguration is followed with cocktail reception of Thai food and the screening of Thai film “Uncle Boonmee who can recall his past life,” which had received the Palm d’Or Award in the Cannes Film festival in 2010.  In addition, on 27 June 2018, there was a session on film-making and inspiration with a Thai film producer, Mr. Apichatpong Weerasethakul, followed by the screening of his short films.

The event was well received by Spanish public who are interested in art films and cinematographic arts.  The Thai films produced by Mr. Weerasethakul have been well known in Spain, where his techniques and inspiration had called for much attention in the country.

Screening Thai films is part of the Embassy’s attempt to promote Thailand and Thai popularity in Spain.  The Embassy’s aim is to offer new dimensions of Thailand to Spanish public, i.e. Thai modern arts.  In addition, it is a way to showcase the talent of new generation of Thai artists and movie producers, who have gain recognition at the international level.
